Ones and zeros
A computer counts in binary – base 2, with only the digits 0 and 1. The wheel shows a number and the small number after it says which base it is in: 13โโ is thirteen as we write it, 1101โ is the same number in binary. Press SPIN! and pick the other one:
How to convert
- Each binary digit is worth twice the one to its right: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128.
- 1101โ is 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13.
- The other way, take away the biggest power of two that fits: 13 is 8 + 4 + 1, so 1101.
- Hexadecimal is base 16: after 9 come A to F, so FFโโ is 15 ร 16 + 15 = 255.
