This way round is the harder one. Recognising Fe as iron is one thing; remembering that iron is Fe and not Ir – which is iridium – is what a test asks. The traps are the symbols from Latin names: sodium Na, potassium K, silver Ag, gold Au, lead Pb, tin Sn, mercury Hg, and tungsten W from its German name.

The wheel opens with the alkali and alkaline earth metals, the nonmetals, the halogens and the noble gases. Click a group to add the transition metals, the lanthanides or the actinides:
The wrong answers come from the same group, so a halogen is asked with other halogens’ symbols – F, Cl, Br, I – which is where the mistakes are made. Change it under Quiz settings:
How to learn them
- Start with one group.
- Tick Take the right ones off the wheel.
- Spin until the wheel is empty – what is left at the end is what you do not know yet.
