What is Orthodox Christmas?
Many Orthodox churches keep Christmas on the 7th of January, because they follow the older Julian calendar. It is celebrated in countries such as Russia, Serbia, Georgia and Ethiopia.
Ways to mark the day
- Share a traditional meal, which often comes after a day of fasting.
- Go to a midnight or evening service, even just to listen to the singing.
- Learn the greeting used in the language of your family or friends.
How the countdown works
The clock counts down to the 7th of January on your own device’s time, so it reaches zero at midnight where you are. When the day is over, it starts again for next year. Full screen puts it on a classroom board or a big screen. To count down to something of your own, enter it under Your own event.
