Where is it on the map?
Every segment of the wheel is a map of a continent with one country filled in red. Press SPIN!, find the red country and pick its name from four answers:
Knowing a country’s shape is one thing; knowing where it lies is what a map test asks for – which of the Baltic states is the one in the middle, which country sits between Senegal and Guinea, where Laos is.
Your score
Score, In a row and Best run are kept beside the wheel. Start again puts the score back to zero:
Small countries get a ring
Every country is on the map, the smallest ones too. Where a country is too small to see – Liechtenstein, Singapore, the islands of the Caribbean and the Pacific – a red ring is drawn round it, so Malta and Tuvalu can be asked like any other.
One continent at a time
The wheel opens with Europe. Click a continent to add it, or switch Europe off and play another one:
Easier or harder
The wrong answers come from the same continent, so a country in Africa is asked with other African countries. Under Quiz settings they can come from the whole world instead, which is easier, and there can be two answers or eight:
About the maps
The maps are drawn from Natural Earth, a free public domain map of the world. Each continent is one map, the same for every question, so what you learn is where things are, not what one picture looks like. The country names are written the way your language writes them, on every language version of this page.
How to learn them
- Start with one group.
- Open Options and tick Take the ones I got right off the wheel.
- Spin until the wheel is empty – what is left at the end is what you do not know yet.
- Then try the same continent in the flag quiz and the country shapes quiz.
