The five families
- Strings – bowed, plucked or strummed, from the violin to the ukulele.
- Woodwind – air through a tube, with or without a reed.
- Brass – the sound made by the player’s lips, not by a reed.
- Percussion – hit, shaken or scraped.
- Keyboards – the piano and everything that works like one.
