How to play Minesweeper
Under some of the squares are mines. Open every square that does not have one, and you win.
- Click or tap a square to open it. Your first click is always safe and opens an area.
- A number tells how many mines touch that square – in the eight squares around it.
- Where you are sure there is a mine, put a flag on it: right-click, long-press on a phone, or switch on Flag mode and tap.
- Click a number that already has all its flags around it, and the rest of its neighbours open at once.
Three levels
- Beginner: 9 x 9 squares, 10 mines.
- Intermediate: 16 x 16 squares, 40 mines.
- Expert: 30 x 16 squares, 99 mines. On a phone the board stands upright, 16 x 30.
Your best time on each level is kept on your device. Beat it.
Tips
- A 1 in a corner: if a 1 touches only one closed square, that square is a mine.
- 1-2-1 on a wall: the two squares next to the 1s are mines, the one by the 2 is safe.
- Count the flags: a 3 with three flags around it is done – open the rest.
- Do not guess early: look for a certain move first. Guess only when there is none.
A little history
Minesweeper came with Windows from 1990 on and became one of the most played computer games ever – in offices as much as at home. The rules have never changed: numbers, flags and a little nerve.
